Personal Taxes

Smart Tax Planning for Every Stage of Life

We help individuals and families with tax returns ranging from straightforward employment income to more involved financial situations. Depending on your needs, we can assist with:

  • Employment, pension, and investment income

  • RRSP contributions and eligible deductions

  • Medical expenses, tuition, donations, and applicable tax credits

  • Rental property income and expenses

  • Capital gains and property dispositions

  • Canadian tax considerations for newcomers and people moving abroad

  • Foreign income and foreign asset reporting requirements

We look beyond the slips you receive. By discussing changes in your circumstances, we can identify information that may otherwise be missed and explain how it affects your return.

Self-Employed Taxes

Stay Organized. Claim Eligible Expenses. Plan Ahead.

Running your own business adds another layer to your personal taxes. You need to report business income, determine which expenses are deductible, and keep records that support your filings.

We help sole proprietors, consultants, and independent professionals organize their financial information and prepare their tax returns. We can review business expenses, discuss the treatment of home office or vehicle costs where applicable.

We can also discuss tax instalments, GST/HST obligations where applicable, and the effect of business decisions on your personal taxes. Our goal is to give you a clearer view of your tax position throughout the year, not only at filing time.

If your business is growing, we can also help you consider how your recordkeeping and tax planning should evolve with it.

Support Beyond the Annual Return

Tax questions do not always arrive during filing season. You may receive a CRA letter, need to correct a previous return, or want to understand the tax impact of a decision before making it.

HCCPA can help you review CRA correspondence, respond to requests for information, assess whether an adjustment is needed, and plan for upcoming changes. We explain your options in plain language and help you take the next step.

File With Greater Confidence

Whether your return is straightforward or involves several sources of income, we are here to help you file accurately and plan with a clearer understanding of your taxes.

How We Work With You

Start With the Information You Have

The documents needed depend on your income and circumstances. Common items include tax slips, RRSP contribution receipts, tuition information, medical expense records, charitable donation receipts, and details of investment or rental income. If you are self-employed, bring records of your business income and expenses, along with any relevant GST/HST information.

Please also tell us about significant changes during the year, such as a move, a change in marital status, a property sale, the start of a business, or a change in tax residency. These details can affect your filing even when there is no tax slip.

You do not need to determine every requirement on your own. We can provide a checklist based on your situation and let you know if anything else is needed.

As we prepare your return, we follow up on missing or unclear items and discuss matters that may affect your filing. Before the return is submitted, we explain the key results and answer your questions. If there are issues to plan for next year, we will bring them to your attention.
